FORK UNION, VA – Fork Union Military Academy alumnus Ali Khalafalla is set to compete in his second-career Olympic Games for Team Egypt in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, starting this weekend. The 2014 alumnus will swim the 50 freestyle, which begins Friday, July 30.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Ceremony begins Friday, July 23 at 8 p.m. ET.

A member of Team Egypt, Khalafalla competed in the 2016 Rio Summer Games as a junior at the University of Indiana and placed 23rd in the men's 50 freestyle with a time of 22.25.

Khalafalla arrived at Fork Union Military Academy as a junior in 2013 and helped the Blue Devils to back-to-back VISAA State Championships. The Cairo, Egypt native set school records in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while earning all-prep, all-state and All-American honors both seasons.

Fork Union won the 2014 VISAA State Championship with just six swimmers and two divers, as Khalafalla set state records in the 50 and 100 freestyles that still stand today.

Khalafalla went on to swim at the University of Indiana where he was an All-American swimmer in the freestyle. He earned four All-America honors in the 2017 NCAA Championships as a junior and two All-America honors as a senior in 2018 NCAA Championships.

Khalafalla is the sixth Fork Union alumnus to compete in the Olympic Games. He joins the prestigious list of long-distance runners: Ibrahim Aden, Jama Bile, Said Basweidan, Kip Cheruiyot and Charles Cheruiyot.
