FORK UNION, VA– The Fork Union Military Academy Prep lacrosse team rallied for a 12-11 nail-biting victory over Christchurch School Tuesday in its season finale.
With the win, the Blue Devils finished the season with an 8-7 overall record.
"We came into this game knowing that it was going to be a tough one," said head coach
Joe Howard. "We just lost a heartbreaker to Hargrave the day before and knew Christchurch was going to be a difficult opponent. After starting slow, we were able to battle back in the second. I think it was really our confidence and energy that carried us in the second half. We've had a few guys really come into their own late in the season, particularly William Minor,
Franklin Wallace and
John Meheen, and it's made us a much more dangerous lacrosse team.
Zach Miller as usual played outstanding. Despite making some mistakes, the defense battled all game long.
John Hughes really made some key saves for us. But above all it was really a fantastic team win and a fantastic way to close out our season."
Christchurch got out to a hot start early in the contest, scoring five goals in the first quarter. Fork Union found itself trailing, 5-1, and responded with three-straight to go into halftime down one (5-4).
The two teams battled in the third quarter, tying the game at eight.
After two lead changes, Fork Union went on a scoring run and netted three-straight goals with under six minutes to go and held on for the 12-11 win.
Zach Miller and
Jack Greenspon led the squad with three goals each, while Greenspon recorded two assists.
Henry Hosking and
Corey Fraser also added two goals apiece for the Blue Devils.
In the cage,
John Hughes picked up six crucial saves.
