RICHMOND, Va. – The Fork Union Military Academy Middle School basketball team recorded a huge road win at Collegiate, defeating the Cougars, 38-35, Wednesday evening.
The win improves the Blue Devils to 6-1 on the season.
"After getting off to a slow start, we settled in and began playing competitive basketball," said head coach
Brooks Berry. "Switching from our zone defense to man-to-man was one adjustment that jump started the team."
Camron Everett led the squad with an outstanding offensive performance, scoring 17 points by hitting three three-point shots. The true unsung hero of the game was
Sulaimon Abubakar-Shidi, who had 10 rebounds against a much bigger squad.
"Winning on the road against a good team isn't easy," added Berry. "It took all six players contributing for us to win this game. I am proud of the toughness and grit the boys showed against a much bigger team. Due to their size, we didn't score many baskets in the paint but five different players mad three-point shots as we moved the basketball well and found the open man."
Fork Union will return to action Tuesday, Feb. 6 when it travels to Charlottesville Catholic for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
