Fork Union Alumnus Khalil “Red” Murdock Selected in 2026 NFL Draft

FORK UNION, VA — Fork Union Military Academy is proud to celebrate alumnus Khalil "Red" Murdock '21, who was selected by the Denver Broncos with the 257th and final pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, earning the title of this year's "Mr. Irrelevant." "

Far from irrelevant, Murdock's journey to the NFL is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and trusting the process.

After completing a postgraduate season at Fork Union Military Academy in 2021, Murdock continued his football career at the University at Buffalo, where he developed into one of the nation's most productive linebackers. Over his collegiate career, he established himself as one of Buffalo's top defensive leaders and finished as the NCAA's all-time leader in career forced fumbles, a remarkable accomplishment that drew national attention leading up to the draft.

The Broncos selected Murdock with the final pick of the draft on Saturday, officially making him the 2026 "Mr. Irrelevant," a title given annually to the final player selected in the NFL Draft. While the title carries a lighthearted tradition, recent history has shown that the final pick can still make a major impact at the professional level.

Murdock's selection adds to Fork Union Military Academy's long-standing tradition of developing athletes who go on to compete at the highest level. His postgraduate year at Fork Union played a pivotal role in helping him earn his Division I opportunity, a path that ultimately led to the NFL.

"Khalil's journey is exactly what Fork Union Military Academy is all about," said head postgraduate coach Frank Arritt. "He trusted the process, put in the work, and continued to grow both on and off the field. We are proud to see him achieve his dream of reaching the NFL."

Murdock now joins the growing list of Fork Union alumni who have gone on to play professionally, further strengthening the Academy's legacy of preparing young men for success beyond the parade field and the classroom.

From Fork Union to Buffalo to the NFL, Khalil "Red" Murdock's journey is proof that no opportunity is too small and no dream is out of reach. Grind now, shine later.
