FORK UNION, VA -- Fork Union Military Academy will host the 27th Annual Gus Lacy Track Classic on Saturday, April 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the newly renovated Gus Lacy Track. Admission is free, with spectator parking available in the grass lot between the track and Route 15.
This annual meet honors the legacy of E.H. "Gus" Lacy, a beloved coach, teacher, and administrator whose impact continues to shape Fork Union athletics. This year, the Academy is proud to recognize three legendary figures who helped build that tradition: Micky Sullivan, John Ransone, and Fred Hardy.
Together, these three coaches helped create one of the most successful eras in Fork Union history. Their collaboration across football, cross country, and track and field turned the Academy into a national powerhouse and left a lasting mark on generations of cadets.
Micky Sullivan, a Fork Union alumnus from the Class of 1967, returned to the Academy in 1983 as head football coach. During his tenure, he built a championship-caliber program that captured eight state titles. A key part of his philosophy was encouraging football players to compete in track during the offseason, a decision that paid dividends across both programs.
Fred Hardy joined Fork Union in 1977 as an English teacher and head track coach. Following in the footsteps of his father, a pioneer in collegiate track and cross country, Hardy elevated the Academy's program to extraordinary heights. His teams captured 20 state championships, a number that could have been even greater given the limited opportunities for private schools at the time. His innovative approach and team-first mindset set a standard that still defines Fork Union track and field today.
John Ransone arrived in 1979 as a science instructor and quickly became an invaluable part of the track program. Specializing in the pole vault, he developed countless champions while also mentoring young athletes and helping them find their place within the sport. Beyond the field, Ransone was known for the relationships he built with cadets, often sharing his love of music and craftsmanship in the barracks.
While their combined 28 state championships speak for themselves, their true legacy lies in the lives they impacted and the culture they helped create at Fork Union.
This year's meet also marks a significant milestone as outdoor track and field returns to the newly renovated Gus Lacy Track. The Academy extends its sincere thanks to Louisa County High School for hosting the event in 2024 and 2025, as well as to the many individuals and families who made the renovation possible.
Special recognition is given to Rich Taddei for his work completing the throwing areas and assembling new equipment, along with the Academy's Advancement team and President for their leadership throughout the project. The Academy is also deeply grateful for the generosity of the Davenport family and the Spiak and Callahan family. Braxton Davenport, a member of the FUMA Athletic Hall of Fame and 2006 Gus Lacy honoree, and the late Nick Spiak, the 2013 honoree, are both honored through their families' continued connection to the program. Spiak's legacy lives on through his grandson,
Robert Callahan, who will compete for Fork Union this weekend.
As part of the tradition, each event at the Gus Lacy Track Classic is named in honor of distinguished alumni, celebrating the enduring impact of those who have contributed to the Academy's rich athletic history.
Competition begins with a scratch meeting at 10:00 a.m., followed by middle school and field events at 10:30 a.m. Running events will begin at 12:00 p.m., following the national anthem and special ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
