Fork Union alumnus Shammond Williams returned to campus last week to make a sizable donation to the Arritt Court Campaign on behalf of the 1993-94 Post Graduate basketball team. The Arritt Court Campaign is a campaign to renovate the Thomas Gymnasium and rebuild the basketball court to be named in honor of Coach Arritt and his wife Betty Jean.
Williams would like to challenge all past PG basketball teams to match the donation of $10,000.
"I have always considered us to be the best team to come through Fork Union," said Williams. "It's never been a question in my mind. But I am sure every team thinks that they are the best. With that being said, what Fork Union is doing for Coach Arritt and the meaning of it all to him and his wife, we want to prove that we are the best. It's not only about basketball, it's about being able to fund this project from a team perspective."
The 1993-94 Fork Union PG Basketball Team
The 1993-94 Fork Union Post Graduate basketball team compiled a 27-2 record. In Coach Arritt's 42-year tenure, only five other teams have compiled 27 or more wins, including the 1986-87 squad who went 29-0.
Below are the members of the 1993-94 team and their collegiate destinations:
- Clint Crosston (Appalachian State University)
- Kelly Gunby (Duquesne University)
- Marc Hutcheson (USC Aiken)
- Terence Jennings (College of William & Mary)
- DeMarco Johnson (UNC Charlotte)
- JJ Lucas (Vanderbilt University)
- Nathaniel Miller (Wofford University)
- James Pelham (James Madison University)
- Greg Robison (Virginia Military Institute)
- Jamir Washington (Robert Morris University)
- Shammond Williams (University of North Carolina)
- Dean Willingham (USC Aiken)
"If all of the past players can get together as a team and support what the school is trying to do for the man who helped change our lives, that is really what it's all about," added Williams.
Shammond Williams
Williams, who captained the 1993-94 squad, went on to play at the University of North Carolina where he became a record-setting player. Upon graduation, Williams held several school records:
- Most Career Three-Point Field Goals Made: 233
- Most Season Three-Point Field Goals Made: 95
- Most Three-Point Field Goals Made in a Game: 8 (tied)
- Highest Career Free Throw Percentage: .849
- Highest Season Free Throw Percentage: .911
Since Williams graduated UNC in 1998, only one of those records has been broken (Marcus Paige surpassed William's UNC record for career three-pointers in 2015).
Williams was drafted in 1998 by the Chicago Bulls and played professional basketball for 13 years.
"Coach Arritt means everything to me," said Williams. "There is no Shammond Williams that people know and get to celebrate from an athletic perspective without Coach Arritt. What he did for me, my family and my community is a blessing."
Williams was inducted into the Fork Union Military Academy Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, and he has returned often to campus to visit with Coach Arritt and others, as well as to speak at the school's summer basketball camp.
