SHORT STORY: Fork Union Military Academy's Postgraduate Lacrosse team faced two tough opponents on the road this past weekend, narrowly falling to Navy Prep (13-12) and Essex Community College (15-12) in highly competitive matchups.
QUOTE:
Against Navy Prep:
"I thought we played competitively on both sides of the ball and had some great moments that helped us build a 10-6 lead midway through the third quarter," said head coach Chris Panos. "Unfortunately, we got a little complacent in key areas and were outplayed on a few possessions in the fourth quarter. That allowed Navy Prep to generate quality chances and capitalize on our missed opportunities. We hit six posts throughout the contest, which was frustrating, but credit to NAPS for winning key ground ball battles late in the game. That shift in momentum ultimately made the difference in what was a hard-fought 13-12 defeat. We had a few chances in the final minute to tie the game, but their goalie came up with some outstanding saves to secure the win."
Against Essex Community College:
"We got down early, trailing 3-0 in the first quarter against the No. 2-ranked JUCO program in the country, but I was proud of how we battled back to tie it up and take a 7-5 lead at halftime," said Panos.
"The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads at different points. Credit to Essex for edging us 5-3 in that period to tie the game at 10 heading into the fourth. We stayed level at 10-10 for the first six minutes of the final stanza, but unfortunately, too many unforced turnovers, untimely penalties, and missed opportunities put us in a tough spot down the stretch. Despite that, we kept the pressure on, forcing their goalie to make a few miraculous saves to seal their well-deserved victory.
"Overall, we had strong contributions across the board, which is promising as we look ahead to our next challenge at Anne Arundel Community College on Saturday, March 1."
