Fork Union Military Academy announced the appointment of Marshall Smith as the new Head Wrestling Coach on July 30, 2024. Smith is entering his second year with the Academy, having joined the Fork Union family last fall as a TAC Officer and assistant wrestling coach.
During his tenure as assistant wrestling coach, Smith played a crucial role in helping the Blue Devils achieve significant milestones. Under his guidance, the team placed fourth overall at the Virginia Prep League Championships. Smith also mentored two wrestlers to second place finishes at the Prep League level and coached an All-Central Virginia honoree, who placed seventh overall at the state level.
Before coming to Fork Union, Smith spent two seasons as the assistant head coach at Liberty Middle School from 2019-2021. He holds a USA Wrestling Copper Level certification, demonstrating his commitment to the sport.
In addition to his coaching experience, Smith has served as a Maritime Enforcement Specialist with the United States Coast Guard since 2021. In this role, he leads a fire team, ensuring their welfare and readiness. From September 2022 to March 2023, he was deployed overseas, conducting security for the Anti-terrorism force protection mission.
Smith is a graduate of Liberty University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. He also attended The Citadel from 2011-2015, studying Secondary Social Studies Education.
Smith resides on campus with his wife, Makenzie, and young daughter Finley. Makenzie will become an instructor in the fall following the birth of their second child.
