Mike Hooper enters his second year as head prep football coach.
Hooper was born in Maryland and raised in the Tidewater area of North Carolina and Virginia. He graduated from Isle of Wight Academy in 1973 and attended Brigham Young University before serving a church mission to Guatemala from 1976 to 1978.
Upon returning, he once again attended Brigham Young University before transferring to Christopher Newport College (now Christopher Newport University) where he received his B.A. in Spanish in 1982. He worked on a master's degree in Statistics at Brigham Young University before accepting a job teaching mathematics and Spanish at Albemarle Academy in North Carolina for the academic year of 1984-1985.
At the end of the academic year he returned to Brigham Young to finish his master's degree, but teaching and coaching was now in his blood. He taught Spanish at Isle of Wight Academy, where he also coached three sports, including the a 15-0 baseball team that won the 1986 Virginia Academies Athletic Conference championship. He has coached football, baseball and other sports as needed at FUMA. He also teaches SAT prep classes.
He is an avid reader who enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.
